Winfield-Mount Union’s tournament trail came to an end on Friday night, as the Wolves fell to Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division foe Wapello.
The Wolves stuck with the Arrows in the early innings, but the much higher seeded Wapello squad ran away with a 12-2 victory.
Wapello started the Class 1A Region 8 opener with a two-run first inning. WMU tied the game up in the top of the second with two of its own, but Wapello responded with three in the bottom half, and two more in the third to take an 8-2 lead.
WMU hung with the Arrows a little bit longer but a five-run Wapello fifth spelled the end of the road due to the 10-run rule.
The Wolves finished the season 4-16. WMU picked up two wins over Pekin, one over New London and one over Danville.
Wapello (21-9) will now move on to play Highland (18-10) in the quarterfinal round. The Arrows have beaten the huskies twice this season, 4-1 and 3-1.
