WINFIELD — A couple of tough innings on defense spelled doom for the Winfield-Mount Union softball team during the Wolves’ home loss to Lone Tree on Tuesday night.
The Lions scored 19 runs in the final three innings of a 22-8 defeat of the Wolves in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division action.
The two big ones were the fifth and seventh innings, which saw Lone Tree score eight runs apiece. The Lions were held to just six runs for the rest of the game.
“It seems to be our nemesis this year,” said WMU head coach Terry Reynolds. “If we could just get by that one inning that comes back and bites us in the back side.”
The Wolves’ offense was there throughout the night. WMU scored two runs in the first inning and one in the third to take a short-lived 3-2 lead. Then, down 14-3 in the bottom of the sixth, WMU rallied for five runs to keep the game alive, at 14-8.
“There are some good key moments that rise every now and then,” Reynolds said. “We're starting to hit the ball, and we're starting to play positioning ball. That's a big difference here.”
Anna Anderson had a big game for the Wolves, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Josie Nelson and Katie Miller both went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Keely Malone knocked in one run of her own.
Quin Smith and Ella Kann both spent time on the mound, with Smith pitching five innings and Kann throwing for two. Each pitcher gave up 11 runs, with none of them being earned.
