WINFIELD - A couple of one-loss teams met up at the Winfield softball field on Monday as 3-1 Winfield-Mt. Union hosted 2-1 Highland. The Huskies got on the board first, but W-MU scored five runs in the middle innings to take the game 5-2.
Highland struck first when Allie Miller knocked in a run with an RBI double in the first inning. Highland kept the lead until W-MU's Keetyn Townsley plated two with a single. After three frames, W-MU led 2-1.
Molly Miller brought two home with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. That stretched the Wolves' lead to 4-1. Anna Anderson brought in the fifth W-MU run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Highland got one run back when Sarah Schneider hit an RBI single in the sixth inning. Highland had two runners on with two outs in the seventh but a fly out to center field ended the contest.
'It's been 10 years since we've beaten this team, 0-16 going into tonight, and these girls didn't quit,” said head coach Walt Jackson after the game. 'They plugged away, did what I asked them to do and played some good ball.”
Keetyn finished the game 2-3 with two RBIs, three stolen bases and a run scored. Miller went 1-3 with two RBis, and Anna was 0-2 with an RBI. Madie Anderson, Jobey Malone, Naya Silva and Kyndal Townsley each picked up two hits on the day. Silva had a stolen base.
Madie had another strong outing in the circle, throwing seven innings and giving up two earned runs on four hits. She struck out 14 batters in the win.
'Madie is a really good pitcher,” said Highland head coach Carrie Wieland after the game. 'I just think we get nervous when she's pitching. We're fast, and we need to put the ball down. We didn't do that.”
W-MU has won their last four games by a minimum of three runs after falling in the season opener against defending 2A champion Louisa-Muscatine. W-MU will next take on Iowa Mennonite in a home game tonight (Tuesday).
'We're making our way,” Jackson said. 'I told them after that game against L&M. I said, ‘If this is our base, the sky is the limit.'”
