WINFIELD — Those who braved the cold and windy temperatures to make it to the Winfield-Mount Union gym on Thursday night were treated to a pair of Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division wins over Louisa-Muscatine.
The Lady Wolves kicked things off with a thrilling 41-37 win, avenging a loss to the Falcons earlier this year. The boys finished off the regular season sweep of L & , winning 95-48.
The Lady Wolves and Falcons were tied 3-3 late in the first quarter. Louisa-Muscatine went ahead on a basket in the final 10 seconds, but WMU guard Pacey Schlee took the ball to the half court line and launched a deep shot into the net, giving the Wolves a 6-5 halftime advantage.
The game was tied 18-18 at halftime, but the Lady Wolves turned it on in the third quarter, scoring a game-high 13 points and keeping L & to six to take a 31-24 lead into the final quarter. The Falcons staged a late comeback in the fourth, but ran out of time.
Madisen Kellogg led the Lady Wolves with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Schlee finished with nine points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Suttyn Schlee had a nice game, going for eight points. Maggie Hutton had five points, four rebounds and four steals. Kaelyn Townsley scored two points and pulled down five rebounds, and Kaylynn Kellogg finished with two points.
The WMU boys stayed unbeaten in conference play, and they did so with flying colors. The Wolves put up a season-high in points, with 95.
WMU scored 20 or more points in each quarter. The Wolves scored 31 of those points in the second.
Abram Edwards led the Wolves with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Cam Buffington scored 25 points of his own, and also led the squad with two blocked shots.
Jake Edwards scored 20 points on the day, including four 3-pointers. Gabriel Hemsworth had 15 points. Carter Loyd scored four points, and led the team with four steals. Eli Miller, Max Edwards and Grant Anderson scored two points apiece.
The now third-ranked (1A) WMU boys are 11-1 on the year, including a 10-0 SEISC North mark. The Lady Wolves are 4-10 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
