Scot Lamm, the current Mt. Pleasant Athletic Director, will have a dual role in the spring season. Lamm was announced this week as the new girls' track and field coach, effective immediately.
Lamm is a former boys' coach at Mt. Pleasant, heading up the team from 2004-2013. He's also a former Mt. Pleasant track athlete.
'It's one of the best sports, in my opinion, to coach,” Lamm says. 'You get to see a lot of kids grow, and times don't lie, so the kids get to see themselves grow. That's always fun.”
It was a unique situation when Lamm applied for the job. Since he would normally be the one making the hire, the coaching-search process was a lot different this time around.
'It's a different deal when you have to apply for the job,” Lamm says. 'Typically I hire the coaches, but in this case, the superintendent took on that role. The school board had some questions about it, a bunch of very valid and good questions about how it would affect other sports, but when you get down to it, I don't see it having much of an effect on anything.”
Lamm says the help he gets from the rest of the track coaches is plenty enough in case he has Athletic Director duties that would interfere with the regular schedule of a coach.
'We've got a great coaching staff,” Lamm says. 'A lot of coaches (and) some volunteer coaches. Everyone else can pick up the slack if I have to meet with another coach or something.”
This comes at a pretty convenient time for Lamm. He will have two daughters on the team, sophomore Karsyn and freshman Kenna. His son Chase, a member of last year's second-place shuttle hurdle team, will be entering his senior season.
'I'm excited about that,” Lamm says. 'Our kids get coached by me all the time anyway, whether it's at home or in their sports, so they're used to it.”
