MUSCATINE - Willow Larsen knifed through the water Saturday to win one race and finish third in another for the Fairfield High School swimming team at the Kickoff Invite girls swim meet.
The Trojans finished in sixth place with 57 points. Cedar Rapids Kennedy won with a total of 431 and the hosts were second at 367. Williamsburg was third at 178, then Burlington 163, Tipton 123 with Keokuk in seventh at 49.
'The meet went well,” Fairfield head swimming coach Brittany Winslow said. 'Most girls beat their personal records.”
Willow Larsen scored a victory for the Trojans by finishing first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 3.6 seconds. She placed third in 200-yard Individual Medley in 2:28.75.
'Willow has some promising times and great potential,” Winslow said.
Other times were Grace Sobaski's 200 Freestyle in 2:51.77, Emma Clubb's 50 Freestyle 30.39 and 500 Freestyle 7:11.28, Anna Westphal's 100 Freesyle 1:19.57, Delaney Breen 100 Back 1:31:71, Clare Else 3:18.74 200 IM, and Viola Welsh 38.74 50 Free. Clubb's 12th place in the 500 Free was the highest individual Trojan finish other than Larsen. Else was 13th and Sobaski 14th in the 100 Breast.
'We are going to continue working on building our endurance and swimming the best they can individually,” Winslow said.
The best finish for a relay was 10th. Sobaski, Else, Clubb and Larsen swam a 2:04.2 in the 200 Free Relay and the same four were 10th in the 400 Free relay.
'Most of the girls times are in a good place,” Winslow said. 'They are swimming times around what they ended at last year, so that is a great improvement and they continue to work hard for me in practice daily.”
