Mackenzie Flattery nailed a 3-pointer with under a minute in regulation Thursday to lift the Fairfield eighth-grade ?A? team over Mount Pleasant 23-20 in Fairfield.
With less than two minutes remaining, the Panthers grabbed a 20-19 lead and Delaney Neil tied the score up from the free throw line, setting up the big 3 from Flattery, who led the Trojans with 11 points.
Delaney Neil had five points, Taylor Ferrel added three, and Alli Deao and Molly Ryan tallied one basket apiece.
?Even though we didn?t shoot the ball very well tonight, the girls still put themselves in a position to win with tough defense,? said head coach Derek Philips.
The Trojans lost the ?B? contest 16-13. Fairfield led 9-6 at halftime and 13-10 at the end of the third period but failed to score in the final quarter. Leading the way for the Trojans were Courtney Gilmore with eight points and Lindsey Repp adding five.
?The ?B? team played well last night but just couldn?t get the shots to fall in the fourth,? said Philips. ?These girls never give up and play hard until the end.?
The eighth-graders will get another shot at Mount Pleasant with games slated for Tuesday.
