FAIRFIELD — Fairfield boys soccer needed nearly all the time allotted in Tuesday nights 2A region 6 first round bout against Centerville.
The Trojans, who just recently defeated Centerville 6-1 last week, were given all they could muster by the Big Reds.
With inside a minute left in the contest, the Trojans were able to secure the goal to take the victory.
Fairfield was relentless on the offensive attack, but couldn’t capitalize through the first 40 minutes and over 39 minutes into the second.
At the same time, the Big Reds did well to keep the Trojans off the board. Centerville ended with 18 saves on the night.
With pressure mounting and the game at 0-0, Fairfield final got the break they needed.
The Trojans sent a shot at Centerville goalkeeper Alex Morgan, who had been flawless prior, but a wet ball slipped through his hands and hit the cross bar leading to a wide-open Lane Stever goal right in front of the net.
With just 49 seconds left, the Big Reds needed a big break and they nearly got it.
Centerville got the ball right in front of the net, but they couldn’t get a foot on it to knot it up.
Fairfield moves to 8-5-2 on the season and will take on Mt. Pleasant (10-4-1) in the next round.
