FORT MADISON — The Washington baseball team was one out away from a Southeast Conference win against Fort Madison on Monday night, but in the end, it was a heartbreaking loss and the first leg of a two-game Bloodhound sweep.
Fort Madison took Game 1, 2-1. The Bloodhounds followed with a 16-6(6) win in Game 2.
Fort Madison’s Landes Williams delivered a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 1-1. The Bloodhounds would walk-off on a Matt Hopper RBI in the eighth.
Washington had scored the lone run in the third frame and the Demons held that lead almost to the bitter end.
Ethan Patterson shut the Bloodhounds down all game long, giving up just one run in seven innings. Lucas Kroll came in to relieve Patterson.
Washington started strong in Game 2, leading 3-0 early and then 4-2 after two frames, but the Demon defense couldn’t hold off Fort Madison for long.
The Bloodhounds scored 10 runs over the third and fourth innings to take a 12-4 lead. Washington scored two more in the fifth, but Fort Madison added four in the sixth to end the game one frame early.
