Laughlin’s 37 leads Highland to 1st victory

There were some special performances by area girls playing high school basketball Friday.
Laughlin scores 37
THORNBURG - Very little practice while her school was virtual learning was no problem for the Huskies' Dani Laughlin in a 68-34 nonconference victory at Tri-County. Highland captured its first win playing its third game of the season, but second in 24 hours, both on the road.
Laughlin made five 3-pointers, seven 2-pointers, 8-of-11 free throws while getting six steals, five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot on her way to 37 total points,
Teammate Abigail Stransky doled out seven assists, connected on three triples, scoring 16 points with eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals.
'The girls fought through adversity, but our patience and discipline need work,” Highland coach Jody Fink said. 'I am proud of the girls through this situation with the epidemic and continued fight.”
Mid-Prairie tumbles to Cascade
WELLMAN - The Cougars grew a 13-10 lead into a 28-12 halftime advantage in a 45-35 River Valley Conference win over Mid-Prairie. Phelan Hostetler's stats against Cascade were 10 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Maddie Nonnenmann added nine points, five rebounds and two assists. Esther Hughes and Myah Lugar had six points apiece.
Manning continues to dominate
ELDON - Isabel Manning hit a new career high, scoring 40 points as Van Buren County rolled past Cardinal 60-29 in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division rivalry game.
VBC dominated in the opening quarters and held a 30-11 halftime lead. The Warriors put up 13 or more points in every quarter.
Along with her 40 points, Manning led the Warriors with eight steals and seven rebounds. Ella Jirak added nine points.
Cardinal's Alexia McClure had 11 points in a loss. Kinsey Hissem added nine.
Tigers can't dig out of early hole
NEW LONDON - The Tigers made it tough on themselves with a goose egg in the first quarter, but the Tigers fought back to give Danville a sweat before falling 58-45.
Danville led 15-0 after one quarter. New London scratched and clawed to cut the Bears' lead to 23-15 at halftime and 34-31 after three quarters. Danville's lead was as little as one point, but the Bears clamped down in the fourth, winning it 24-14.
Marah Hartrick dropped 20 points in a loss. Ashlyn McSorley had 10. Keaura Williams and Sophie Malott finished with six points apiece, and Natalie Burden had three.
No. 11 Wolves refuse to lose
WAPELLO - The Winfield-Mt. Union defense gave up six or fewer points in each of the fourth quarters in a SEISC North win at Wapello. The 11th-ranked (1A)Wolves won every period en route to a 37-22 victory. WMU is now 8-0 this season.
Bradie Buffington had a great night off the bench, leading the Wolves with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kyndal Townsley finished the night with six points. Farrah Nelson had five points and 10 rebounds, and Jenna Buffington added five points of her own.
Golden Hawks prey on Monticello
MONTICELLO - Mid-Prairie won this RVC game Saturday with a 14-8 lead on the Panthers on the way to a 26-18 advantage at the break and it was 39-30 before Monticello's rally fell short and the Hawks won 44-42.
Danville downs Highland
DANVILLE - Highland's girls played a basketball game for just the second time this season Thursday in a Super Conference nondivisional game, Highland stayed with a Danville team (14-10 after a quarter and 29-22 at half) playing its seventh game, but the third quarter was 19-3 for the Bears with the end result a 62-39 Huskies loss.
In the loss, Dani Laughlin nearly had a double-double with 10 points and eight steals. Abigail Stransky scored 10 points while Jenna Sands went for six, then Sarah Burton and Kayla Cerny had four apiece. Jessica Kraus and Katelyn Waters each had two points and Emma Soukup scored one.
Burton was Highland's leading rebounder with six with Waters and Cerny grabbing four each. Sands had two blocks. Laughlin passed out four assists and Cerny three.
'Danville's speed and trapping defense got us going faster than we wanted,” Fink said. 'The times we took a breath and saw what we were doing, we were fine. It was a very physical and messy game.”
