The Trojans? non-conference baseball game against Mid-Prairie ended Tuesday with little more than a flicker but a 5-4 win for Fairfield.
The one-run win came in close yet shortened fashion when the game was called after five innings due to poor visibility; the field?s lights were not in working order as the sun set.
Despite Fairfield?s defense committing five errors which led to four unearned runs, starter Darrin Dimmitt kept the damage to a minimum. Dimmitt pitched all five innings and allowed five hits and one walk.
?I was impressed with Darrin?s mental toughness on the mound,? said Fairfield head coach Josh Allison. ?He did not let the five errors affect his pitching.?
The Trojans scored two of their five runs in the opening inning, when a two-run single from Tyler Cooksey scored both Mason Ellis and Josh Dimmitt.
Mid-Prairie tied the game at 2-all in the top of the second inning, but a sacrifice bunt by Josh Dimmitt and run-scoring walk by Ellis in the third handed Fairfield a 4-2 lead.
Fairfield tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning when Ellis scored on a single by Austin Gridley.
Ellis had a great day from the plate going 3 for 3 with a trio of runs scored. Gridley was 2 for 2 with one RBI and Cooksey finished 1 for 2 with a pair of runs batted in.
The Trojans (13-16-1, 7-7 SEC) host Washington in a Southeast Conference doubleheader today. As always, Allison will be looking to see the Trojans make strides as they enter the season?s home stretch.
?It?s pretty obvious we need to clean up our defense moving forward and getting prepared for district play,? the coach added.
