Local athletes competing in Special Olympics tournament

IOWA CITY ? Six area individuals will be joining more than 900 Iowa athletes at the 25th annual Special Olympics Mid-Winter Tournament March 9-10 in Iowa City.

Jessica Clements, Ross Robinson, Ronnie Withrow, Nathan Mathis, Justin Cross and Andrew Peiffer, all of Fairfield, are set to compete in the games. Clements, Robinson, Mathis, Cross and Peiffer will be competing in the basketball skills competition. Withrow, 33, is participating in the dead lift and bench press contests.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. March 10 at the University of Iowa Field House. Events, including basketball, cheerleading, gymnastics and power lifting, will run until approximately 3:30 p.m.

In addition to competition, a banquet will be held March 9 at the Marriott Exhibition Hall, and a dance for all participants will take place after the banquet. A Health Promotion Clinic will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 10 in Classroom E220 at the Field House.

The tournament is open to the public and admission is free.
