Highland, WACO, Columbus and WMU all win conference games, Hillcrest rolls in non-conference clash

A Top-10 upset and a couple of comeback victories highlighted a near-perfect night for the Union coverage area’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division girls basketball teams on Tuesday.
Night one of SEISC North action exceeded all expectations, as all four games went down to the final minutes. Highland scored a uge upset win over No. 10 Lone Tree, Winfield-Mount Union outlasted Pekin and both WACO and Hillcrest Academy walked away winners.
Highland 60, No. 10 (1A) Lone Tree 47
Highland continued their hot start to the season with a 60-47 victory over defending SEISC North champion Lone Tree, utilizing a 32-point night from standout freshman Kamryn Fink to pull off the win.
Fink hit five 3-pointers in the win, raising her season average to a scolding 23.3 points per game. Katie Herrig added 10 points. Mackenzie Davis had eight. Hailey Brun scored seven, and Katelyn Thomann finished with three, as the Huskies moved to 3-0 overall to start the season.
Winfield-Mount Union 40, Pekin 29
Pekin had led most of the game, including 15-14 at halftime and 26-21 after three quarters, but WMU went on a huge run in the fourth, winning the period 19-3 to win its second game to start the year.
Madisen Kellogg scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Wolves. Kynlee Buffington finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Suttyn Schlee finished with 12 points. Kaeyln Townsley had two points and seven rebounds, and Josie Nelson filled the stat sheet with 1 point, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
WACO 41, Wapello 28
The Warriors got it done on the road, thanks in part to a 19-3 first quarter run. Wapello clawed back into the game, but WACO held on for the SEISC North win.
Wapello cut the lead down to 25-15 by halftime, but the Warriors stretched the lead to 37-21 after three quarters and held on down the stretch.
Columbus 42, Louisa-Muscatine 37
Columbus came back from a fourth-quarter deficit to upend the Falcons by five in a SEISC North clash. Louisa-Muscatine led 26-25 going into the final eight minutes.
Ariana Vergara led the Wildcats with 15 points. Isabel Rendon had 11. Lily Coil scored eight. Frannie Sosa had four. Kinlee Brown collected three, and Ellie Sanders finished with one.
Hillcrest Academy 69, Cedar Valley Christian 32
It was all Ravens in a non-conference home game, which saw the dynamic duo of Malia Yoder and Claire Withrow combine for 28 points.
Yoder scored 26 on the night to lead the Ravens. Withrow had 22, hitting five 3-pointers on the game. Delaney Shaw and Marryn Boshart scored eight points each, and Niva Helmuth finished with five.
Davis County 60, New London 22
The Tigers couldn’t keep up with Davis County in a non-conference road game. The mustangs led 16-6 after one quarter, 34-10 at halftime and 44-17 after three.
The loss brings New London down to 0-2 to start the season.
