FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield boys basketball team had lost 23 games in a row coming into Friday night’s Southeast Conference opener, but all those losses led up to one of the most exciting wins in recent memory.
The Trojan boys basketball team knocked off Fort Madison 57-55 on two late free throws by Rileey Perkins, earning an SEC win and making a big statement on the first night of conference play. The Fairfield girls fell 54-21.
The Trojans and Bloodhounds were tied at 51-51 with less than 35 seconds to play when Fort Madison drew an off-the-ball foul on Luke Konczal, but the Bloodhounds earned a technical foul when celebrating the call, giving the Trojans two shots on the other end.
The Bloodhounds came up empty when both free throws rimmed out, and Perkins nailed both shots on the other side, giving the Trojans a 53-51 lead with the ball. Perkins got the ball, was fouled again, and once more hit a pair of shots to give Fairfield a four-point advantage, one the Trojans wouldn’t give up.
Fairfield had trailed 13-10 after one quarter, 25-22 at halftime and 39-36 after three periods.
Perkins finished the night with 25 points. Andrew Myers scored 13. Eli Zillman had 12. Konczal finished with four, and Voss Richardson scored three.
The Fairfield girls were down just one point, at 6-5 after one quarter, but Fort Madison stretched the lead to 20-11 by halftime and 39-15 after three.
Faith Jones scored eight points to lead Fairfield. Emma Metcalf hd four. Natalie Steele scored three. Emma Septer, Grace Lyon and Vanessa Kessel each had two.
