FAIRFIELD - The Southeast Conference has once again been affected by low numbers for its areas teams. Due to a shortage of players in the lower levels, at least two of the five SEC teams competing in Class 3A's District 6 will be playing fewer games than planned in 2019.
Fairfield has decided to forego the junior varisty season, saying the school only has enough for one varsity and one lower-level team. In an email to area Athletic Directors, Fairfield AD Jeff Courtright said the Trojans will cancel their JV games. The school is keeping open the idea of playing some freshman/sophomore games before varsity games on Friday nights instead of just freshman games.
Courtright said in the email that they were hoping for larger numbers, and had planned to try and play three levels this year, but it wasn't possible with the numbers.
Ft. Madison will not be able to play freshman games, said Activities Director Jeremy Swink in a separate email to area schools.
The Bloodhounds will be bumping their home varsity games up 30 minutes, to 7 p.m., so fans who regularly go to just varsity games will have to head south a little earlier than usual.
