WATERLOO — It was a busy weekend for Fairfield’s Rumin Luo, who finished up his dream 2024 season with a fifth-place finish at the Class 1A state boys singles tournament in Waterloo.
Luo, a Maharishi student who plays with Fairfield this year, went 1-and-1 in the championship round and battled all the way through the consolations to play in the fifth place match.
Luo started his tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lewis Central’s Christian Jensen. However, Luo would fall 6-0, 6-0 to top-ranked Jack Briggs of Pella.
In the consolation round, Luo got some revenge over the Dutch by knocking out Pella’s Ben Van Gorp 6-3, 6-0. He then dropped Kuemper Catholic’s Mason Reicks 6-3, 6-3
Luo took on Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Tyler Grote in the fifth place match. Grote prevailed in a nail-biter, winning 7-5, 6-4.
The run finished off a stellar junior season for Luo, who helped the Trojans go undefeated in the regular season and win the Southeast Conference championship this spring.
