FAIRFIELD — Fairfield senior Connor Lyons has made his college choice. The Trojan pitcher and outfielder will be off to Southeastern Community College in Burlington next fall.
“It was definitely an easy choice,” Lyons said. “They have a great program.”
And indeed they do. SCC will come into this spring having gone 38-15 overall and 24-6 in conference play the previous season.
Lyons will be pitching for the Storm. He was one of the most used throwers on the Trojans’ team last year, throwing in nine games, tied for a team high.
Lyons had a 3-5 record last year, a 5.52 ERA and 24 strikeouts, which was second most for the Trojans. He will be one of the leading returners on the mound for the Trojans this summer.
“He does an amazing job of working, especially in a leadership role, and showing the younger kids how to work,” said Fairfield baseball coach Josh Allison. “I think we've got that built in to our program.”
Lyons was part of a Fairfield squad that finished 11-18 overall and 8-10 in the Southeast Conference last season. He says trusting his teammates has helped him grow as a high school pitcher.
“ I know I have to count on my players behind me to do their job, so I can succeed,” Lyons said. “Having a defense behind me is really key. I have great defenders behind me in high school.”
Lyons plans on majoring in Accounting or Personal Finance, as he takes on the life of a collegiate baseball player.
“Great things happen for great kids for great reasons,” Allison said. “That’s why it is happening for him.”
