CORALVILLE - Through one day in Coralville, the Union coverage area still has two wrestlers still fighting through the winner’s bracket at the 2026 girls state tournament.
Fairfield junior Samantha Lyons and Pekin senior Hailey Pedrick each went 2-0 on Thursday, setting themselves up for Friday’s semifinal round.
Lyons, a 170-pound returning semifinalist, wrestled for under three minutes on Day 1. She pinned Harper Manwarren of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayshire in 47 seconds, and followed that by pinning Lake Mills’ Afton Dean in 1:55.
“I feel like I’m a little more calm this year,” said Lyons, who came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed. “After beating the No. 1 seed last year, I felt like I had a big expectation after that and I was very emotional. This year, I’m kind of just going through it. I’ve already come to terms with myself with all of the emotional stuff that’s already been happening, and I’m just using that emotion to just push myself through this one.”
Lyons is the only Fairfield wrestler left, after Kendra Allison went 1-2 at 235 pounds. Allison’s lone win was an 11-3 victory over Wapello’s Reese Connolly during the consolation round.
Pedrick went into the third period in both of her matches before getting the pin. She was up 6-0 against Kuemper Catholic’s Cara Schuette in the opener before pinning her with less than a minute left. She was then down 4-3 against Emmetsburg’s Paytn Haack before getting another third-period pin.
Like Lyons, Pedrick is the only wrestler left standing for her school. Lexa Nelson was 0-2 for Pekin at 110, and Lila Miller went 0-2 at 120.
Lyons will wrestle against third-seeded Grace Pinckney of Mt. Vernon in tomorrow’s semifinal. The top seeds also advanced at the top of the bracket.
Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Pedrick will take on Taylor Stiefel of East Buchanan, the No. 1 seed. The top seeds in the bottom half of Pedrick’s 145-pound bracket also advanced on.
Mid-Prairie’s Sophie Miller (145) and Ellie Callahan (190) went 2-1 on Day 1, and will both be wrestling in the consolation round on Friday. Highland’s Adley Sweeting (120) and Chloe Sexton (190) did the same, and Sexton will be wrestling against Callahan in the first match.
Highland’s Maiya Singbeil did not make it to Day 2, falling in both of her matches.
Van Buren County’s Brystol Wiley (100) went 2-1, and is still alive in the consolation bracket, while Armony Adams (105) lost both of her matches.
Sigourney-Keota’s Sadie Clarahan (120) and Kia Montgomery (125) are both out. Clarahan went 0-2, while Montgomery was 1-2.
