DES MOINES - As expected, there were plenty of Panthers who performed in crunch time at the Drake Relays. Mt. Pleasant picked up four top-10 finishes over the weekend, three of which came in the field.
The best result of the weekend went to Lexie Magnani in the girls' shot put. Magnani took third place in the shot put, throwing a 40-5.50 on her second attempt. Tipton's Jamie Kofron won the shot put, spiking a win on her last attempt with a 45-2.25. Brylie Zeisneiss of South Hardin threw a 45-1.75.
Rylan Seberg had the best result for the Panther boys. He took fourth in the long jump, leaping 21-8.25 on his very first attempt. Dike-New Hartford's Parker Kiewiet took the top spot in that event, with 22.8. Mt. Pleasant's Khang Truong was 21st, with a leap of 18-9.75.
The next best result for Mt. Pleasant went in yet another field event. Sam Beatty tied for seventh in the boys' high jump, leaping 6-5. Beatty finished the meet in a tie with Fairfield's Landon Kooiker. The two will fight for the Southeast Conference championship this week, and are among the favorites in Class 3A, as are Magnani and Seberg in their respective events.
Maggie Cristoforo was the top Panther on the track. She finished 1:06.28 to take eighth place in the girls' 400-meter hurdles. Janette Schraft of Glenwood won the event, crossing the line in 1:03.21. There were five Class 3A competitors in the top eight, setting up for an intense final stretch of the season.
Zach Beason gave Mt. Pleasant their third top-10 finish in the field. Beason threw 155-10 in his third attempt to take 10th overall, finishing just off of the finals, which took the top nine. Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Cam Jones won 178-5 to win the event.
Mt. Pleasant's boys' 4X100 team is now the top time in Class 3A. The squad of Truong, Chase Lamm, Seberg and Beason finished 12th in the relays, crossing in 44 seconds. Winfield-Mt. Union was also in that race, bringing the team of Christian Gerot, Juanito Piper, Brody Barton and Brandon Snowden, but they took a DNF (Did Not Finish).
The Panther boys' shuttle hurdle team of Beason, Tate Shull, Konnor Peterson and Lamm finished 12th place, in 1:01.96. The boys' distance medley squad of Truong, Lamm, Seberg and Jacob Stukerjurgen crossed the tape in 3:39.84 for 16th.
Abby Ryon took 17th in the 3000-meter run. She broke the school record in the event, crossing in 10:33.03.
Lamm finished 30th in the 110-meter high hurdles, crossing the tape in 15.92 seconds. The girls' 4X100 team of Maddie Williamson, Karsyn Lamm, Lyndi Vantiger and Avery Sutter finished in 83rd place, in 53.20 seconds.
