DEWITT — The Maharishi tennis team had their hands full, playing at Central DeWitt in the Class 1A Region 4 final. The Pioneers were without top player Ishita Mukadam and the short-handed squad couldn’t move past the hosting Sabres, falling 5-0.
Poojita Mukadam gave it all she had in the No. 1 singles matchup. She fell in a three-setter, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Ria Altynska-Ross dropped the No. 2 matchup 6-0, 6-3. Daira Valls lost the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-2.
Aparajita Kalra nearly had a singles win. She fell 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 in the No. 4 match. Annie Wang fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
Joyce Wang was still playing in the No. 5 singles match, trailing 7-5, 4-2, when the clinching fifth point was scored.
The game left Maharishi one win short of the state tournament, which takes eight teams, including four to the final site.
Maharishi ends the team portion of this season 12-1. The Pioneers still have three players remaining in the singles and doubles tournament, as Ishita Mukadam will play in next week’s Class 1A state singles tournament, while Altynska-Ross and Kalra will play in the doubles tournament.
