Maharishi girls win Pioneer Invitational
Pioneers sweep singles, take second in pair of doubles

FAIRFIELD — The Maharishi girls tennis team played some great tennis in its own Pioneer Invitational on Saturday, May 6.
The Pioneers welcomed Albia, Davis County and Centerville to Punj Tennis Center for the invitational.
Maharishi finished atop the leaderboards with 100 points, followed by Davis County with 76, Albia with 50 and Centerville with 38.
Duos and individuals played 11 sets in each match.
In singles, the Pioneers picked up a pair of sweeps.
Ishita Mukadam won her opening match against Albia’s Peyton Popson 11-0.
She followed that up with another 11-0 win over Centerville’s Olexa Williams.
In the final round, Mukadam was a winner over Davis County’s Calee Smith 8-3.
In the No. 2 single’s bouts, Poojita Mukadam was a winner 11-0 and 9-2 through her first two rounds.
She defeated Centerville’s Emma Weber and Albia’s Ryleigh Birchmier.
In the final, Mukadam was a winner 11-0 over Davis County’s Alyssa Rudd.
In doubles, Bella Castle and Sara Valls were victorious 11-0 and 8-3 over their first two matches.
They topped Centerville’s Alee Peterson and Veronica Hayes in the first round and Albia’s Chloe DeMoss and Megan Teno in the second.
In round three, the two came up short to Davis County’s duo of Maddie and Abby Warning 2-9.
Maharishi’s second doubles duo of Daira Valls and Sonya Kandyba suffered a pair of defeats and one win.
The two fell in the opening round 5-6 to Albia’s Brookelynn Spinler and Christa Gronewold.
In the second, the pair bounced back with an 8-3 victory over Centerville’s Kenly Shilling and Sophie Henderson.
In their final match of the day, Valls and Kandyba fell one set short, 5-6, to Davis County’s Addison Stuchel and Jada Will.
