FAIRFIELD — Fairfield and Maharishi School boys tennis kicked off the first round of team substate on Friday along with Centerville and Oskaloosa.
Maharishi had a flawless day of tennis as the Pioneers punched a ticket to the second round of substate with 5-0 victories over Centerville and Oskaloosa.
For Fairfield, it was a tough day.
The Trojans came up short to Oskaloosa in their opening match 5-4, ending their postseason team run.
The Pioneers started off their day against Centerville.
Ruimin Luo grabbed a No. 1 singles victory 6-2 and 6-1.
In the No. 2 bout, Jayanta Wegman was a winner 6-0 and 6-2.
Polo Altynski-Ross was victorious 6-1 in each of his two matches.
Han Wang and Mekhi Kahiu both went perfect through their two sets. Wang and Kahiu came out on top 6-0 in each of their two sets.
With the five singles’ victorious, there was no need for doubles matches.
Against Oskaloosa, Luo grabbed his second victory of the day 6-0, 6-0 against the Indian’s Myles Strait.
Wegman’s second win came against Jacob Jones 6-1 in a pair of sets.
Altynski-Ross downed Camryn Cassens 6-3 and 6-0.
Wang picked up a 6-2, 6-3 match win over Jakob Stek and Kahiu topped Ethan Stek 6-3, 6-0.
The five wins kept the Pioneers out of doubles and moved them onto the next round.
Fairfield gave Oskaloosa everything they had in the two’s first round bout.
The Trojans and Indians were knotted up at 2-2 after four matches, as Garrett Flanagan and Jace Hannes were each winners.
But when all was said and done, the Trojans could only grabbed two more matches as the Indians were victorious in three.
With the loss, Fairfield is now out of team play.
