BURLINGTON — The Maharishi girls’ tennis team took a trip to Burlington on Tuesday night for the first meet of the year. It was a nail-biter to the very end, but the Pioneers came up just one win short.
Notre Dame took three of the singles matches and two of the doubles matches to knock off Maharishi 5-4.
The Pioneers won the first three singles matches. Ria Altynska-Ross won 8-1 in the No. 1 match. Aparajita Kalra won 8-6 in the No. 2 match, and Joyce Wang battled to victory at No. 3, winning 9-8(10-7).
Chaeyoon Kim, Kathy Tang and Sohani Singh each fell 8-1 in the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles matches respectively.
With things tied up at 3-3, Maharishi won just one doubles match. Altynska-Ross and Wang won a thriller at No. 1, beating the top Nike team 9-8(10-8). Kalra and Tang fell just short at No. 2 doubles, dropping it 9-7, and Kim and Singh fell 8-2 in the No. 3 doubles match.
The loss brings Mahrishi to 0-1 overall to start the season. The Pioneers will host thier home opener on Friday against Mt. Pleasant.
