Pioneers sweep Fairfield, follow up with unbeaten run through Fort Madison Invitational

Maharishi girls tennis has had a spectacular run through the first month on the season.
The Pioneers currently sit at a perfect 4-0 and have yet to give up a match in a head-to-head this year.
The latest opponent to be checked off the list was Fairfield, along with a handful of adversary’s on Saturday at the Fort Madison Girls Tennis Invitational.
Against the Trojans (4-2), the Pioneers took the 9-0 victory with Ishita Mukadam leading the way in the No. 1 spot.
Mukadam defeated the Trojan’s Natalie Steele 6-1 and 6-3.
In the No. 2 match, Poojita Mukadam topped the Trojan’s Emma Wendland 6-0 in each of the two sets.
The No. 3 set ended with the Pioneer’s Ria Altynska-Ross on top over the Trojan’s Lola Hatchette, 6-1, 6-2.
Maharishi’s Daira Valls Blazquez defeated Fairfield’s Sriya Yammanur 6-0 in two sets during match four.
Aparajita Kalra was a winner in the fifth singles match 6-4, 6-2 over the Trojan’s Mareyn Dunkin.
The sixth and final singles set ended with Joyce (Jiusi) Wang winning 7-5, 6-2 over Fairfield’s Una Carter.
In doubles, Ishita Mukadam and Poojita Mukadam were winners over Wendland and Yammanur 8-1.
In the second doubles match, Altynska-Ross and Kalra defeated Steele and Dunkin 8-6.
Finally, Blazquez and Wang grabbed a victory in the No. 3 doubles match 6-1 over Hatchette and Carter.
At Fort Madison, which featured just No. 1 and No. 2 matches, the Pioneers were dominant.
In a field that featured Ottumwa, Burlington Notre Dame, Keokuk and Fort Madison, the Pioneers finished first overall.
Ottumwa took second, followed by Notre Dame, Keokuk and Fort Madison.
Ishita Mukadam kicked things off winning the opening No. 1 singles flight after upended Ottumwa’s Julia Cordon Diaz de Entresotos. Mukadam followed with victories over Lillian Buckner of Fort Madison, 8-0, and Elizabeth Hamma of Burlington Notre Dame 8-1.
The No. 2 player for Maharishi was Poojita Mukadam. Mukadam picked up wins over Alixandra Kern of Fort Madison 8-0, Isabella Callison of Notre Dame, 8-3, and Emerson Keith of Ottumwa 8-0.
In doubles, Ria Altynska-Ross and Aparajita Kalra were winners in all four of their matches.
The pair were winners 8-2, 8-1, 8-4 and 8-0 in each of those matches.
Meanwhile, Daira Valls and Joyce Wang notched four victories as well. They won 8-4, 8-2, 8-2 and 8-0.
Maharishi head coach Lawrence Eyre said he’s proud of how the girls performed in the tournament.
“Our girls arrived ready to play today,” Eyre said. “I was delighted to see them play effective tennis throughout the tournament. Maybe the cold and wind inspired them.”
The Pioneers host Keokuk Monday, April 22 at the Punj Center and (in a rain makeup) will host Mount Pleasant at Punj Tuesday, April 23.
