Martinez named MCC Pitcher of the Week after one-hitter

Iowa Wesleyan College pitcher Jorge Martinez has been named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday afternoon as the MCC released its weekly awards.?

Martinez received the award after an outstanding performance Sunday afternoon in a nine-inning game against William Penn University. The lefthander threw a complete game one-hit shutout, striking out 13 and walking one in a 9-0 IWC win.?

Martinez struck out 10 of the first 16 batters he faced and allowed only a third inning single, helping Wesleyan take two of three in a weekend series with the Statesmen. He faced just two batters over the minimum in throwing his second straight shutout.?

For the season Martinez is 6-1 with a 2.79 earned run average. He has allowed 37 hits in 51 2/3 innings, striking out 50 and walking 15. Martinez also has thrown three complete games, including shutouts over Penn and last week against Ashford University. He leads the MCC in wins and strikeouts, and opponents have a .198 batting average against him this season.

The Tigers will continue in MCC play on Wednesday, facing St. Ambrose University in Davenport for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
