There have been a lot of great three-point shooters to play for the Iowa Wesleyan women's basketball program, but one name stands above all after Saturday. Darby Massner hit three shots from down town to break the school's career three-point scoring record in a 68-49 loss.
The record was previously held by Ali (DeVries) Boyd, who played from 2006-2009, until Massner broke the record in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers had trouble holding Spalding off the offensive glass in the game, which led to multiple put-back opportunities for the Golden Eagles. IW gave up 19 offensive rebounds on the day.
'That's a disgusting stat,” said head coach Jack Bruns. 'Anytime you do that, it shows a lack of heart. The ball didn't bounce our way tonight, but we certainly didn't do ourselves any favors.”
IW trailed 21-13 after one quarter and 23-21 at halftime. The Tigers were down 43-26 after three quarters.
Darby and Allie Massner scored 13 apiece in the loss to lead the Tigers. Harriet Fowler had nine points. Deericka Martin scored seven. Sarah Kavanh had three. Madison Scholl had two. Da'Jahh Swolley finished with one, and Kieley Allen had one.
IW is now 68-49 overall and 2-9 in the conference. The Tigers will play Principia College tonight (Tuesday) at 5:30 p.m. Principia is a SLIAC team but is currently on probation from missing last season, so the game will not count on the conference standings.
