The Midwest Collegiate Conference has released the brackets for the final round of the 2011 MCC Softball Tournament, to take place May 7-8 at Drake University in Des Moines.
A wild first weekend of the tourney has resulted in an intriguing mix of teams still left as well as a pair of surprising opening games for the Final 4 double-elimination tourney. The two top seeds heading into the tourney (William Penn and Grand View) are both alive, but they have been joined by original number-seven seed Iowa Wesleyan as well as number-nine seed Clarke.?
Even more, as a result of teams being reseeded after the first round of the tourney, Grand View is now the top seed, Iowa Wesleyan is now the second-seed and Clarke is the third-seed, while regular season champion William Penn is the number-four seed after being the ?at-large? qualifier for the Final 4 as the team finishing highest in the regular season to not win its ?pod? tourney. As a result, the two teams who finished 1-2 in the regular season (William Penn and Grand View) will meet in the first round on Saturday, while Iowa Wesleyan and Clarke also will meet in the first round.?
IWC and Clarke will open Saturday?s play at 9:30 a.m., with Penn and Grand View to play at 12:30 p.m. The losers and winners of those games will then face each other, with one team being eliminated on Saturday before the final three teams play off on Sunday.
?Grand View, Iowa Wesleyan and Clarke all qualified for the final round on the basis of winning their pods. Grand View came back from an early defeat by Viterbo to win its pod, while Clarke pulled the stunner of the first round, twice knocking off top seed William Penn to win its grouping. Iowa Wesleyan also won three games against Waldorf and Mount Mercy, the 3-4 finishers in the regular season, to advance to this weekend.?
The winner of next weekend?s Final 4 will receive the MCC?s automatic berth to the NAIA National Softball Championships May 19-25 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
