MARSHALLTOWN — Dominic McCain had two days left in his Mid-Prairie High School golf career and made the most of it Thursday and Friday at Elmwood Country Club in the 36-hole Class 3A Boys State Golf Tournament.
McCain capped his season and career with an 11th-place performance and second team All-State honors.
It was lightly raining as McCain shot a 40 on his first nine holes. The rain tapered off, and he finished with a 41 for an 81, tied for 13th after the first round Thursday.
There was no rain on Day 2, but the temperature dropped into the 40s, and the winds picked up. McCain posted a 3-over 38 on his first nine and finished with a 42 to card an 80. His 161 total tied for 11th out of 68 golfers. The top six golfers make up the first team, the next six are second team.
Mid-Prairie coach Kelby Bender said McCain was happy with his score but thought he left a couple strokes on the hilly tough par 70 course that has a lot of blind shots. The greens were firm and fast with a lot of slope and break to them. McCain played a practice round the Sunday before and “used the experience to play two smart rounds.
“Dominic has worked hard and was a great leader for us. I am so happy for and proud of Dominic and his accomplishments this season and his career.”
For the season, he averaged 39.7 strokes per nine holes and 80.5 strokes in 18-hole tournaments. He was the meet medalist five times, runner-up three times including the district meet that qualified him for state. He finished fourth at the River Valley Conference tourney.
