Ladies and gentlemen, the 2023-24 Iowa high school athletic season has officially arrived.
Both Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant held ‘Meet the Players’ nights on Friday night as a way to make fans familiar with the current crop of fall sports athletes.
In Fairfield, the annual ‘Meet the Trojans’ night gave fans the opportunity to watch both the volleyball team and the football team play at the same time.
The Trojan volleyball team held an intrasquad scrimmage at the high school, while the football team scrimmaged Ottumwa just outside the doors at Trojan stadium.
In Mt. Pleasant, the Panther volleyball team and football team both held intrasquad scrimmages, as the volleyball team showed out at 4 p.m., and the football team followed later that night.
The Mt. Pleasant ‘Meet the Panthers’ night also gave fans the chance to scope out a couple of new head coaches. Coach Logan Wall was there leading her Panther volleyball team, and Coach John Bowlin was leading the Panther football team later that night.
In both instances, cheerleaders and cross-country runners were also recognized by their respective hometown fans.
Washington was a hopping place as well, as the Demons faced Muscatine in a JV-Varsity football scrimmage, one week ahead of the first official game.
The three big schools weren’t the only ones getting their cleats into the ground. The area saw scrimmages and ‘Meet the Players’ nights all throughout Southeast Iowa. Just a little taste of what is to come as the fall sports season rolls out this week.
