How Union area volleyball teams performed in weekend action

Postseason volleyball is just one week away and Union area teams are wrapping up their final regular season matches and tournaments. Several teams were in action over the weekend to build some momentum ahead of regional play.
Here’s how Union area teams performed in their most recent matches.
Mid-Prairie competed in the CCA Volleyball Invitational on Saturday and went 3-2 against some strong competition. The Golden Hawks picked up 2-0 wins over Pleasantville (21-15, 21-11) and Anamosa (21-12, 21-14) as well as a 2-1 victory over Class 2A No. 6 Union Community.
The Golden Hawks’ two losses both came against ranked opponents. They fell 1-2 (18-21, 21-17, 10-15) defeat to Class 4A No. 6 North Scott and 0-2 (13-21, 11-21) to No. 1 Clear Creek Amana.
Washington played five matches, including three against ranked teams at the Pella Invite on Saturday. The Demons dropped their first four matches to Grinnell 0-2 (18-21, 10-21), 5A No. 7 West Des Moines Valley 0-2 (9-21, 6-21), Knoxville 0-2 (11-21, 12-21) and 4A No. 3 Pella 0-2 (17-21, 9-21).
Washington didn’t leave the tournament empty handed, however. It picked up a 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) over 1A No. 2 Holy Trinity Catholic in its final match.
Fairfield and Mount Pleasant both traveled to Oskaloosa High School for a tournament Sautrday. The Trojans went 3-1 over four matches, including a 2-1 (15-21, 21-10, 15-13) win over the Panthers. Fairfield also defeated Marshalltown 2-1 (21-18, 17-21, 15-5), Oskaloosa 2-0 (21-9, 23-21) and lost to Ottumwa 1-2 (21-17, 20-22, 15-17).
Southeast Iowa Super Conference teams were in action last Thursday. Columbus defeated Highland 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-13) and improved to 6-1 in SEISC North play. The Wildcats have matches against Hillcrest Academy and Washington to wrap up the regular season.
The Ravens took on SEISC North foe Winfield-Mount Union in a thrilling match that saw neither team win a set by more than three points. The Wolves came away with a narrow victory in four sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23).
WACO lost a SEISC North match (17-25, 18-25, 24-26) to Louisa-Muscatine. The Warriors wrap up the regular season at home against Pekin on Tuesday.
In SEISC South play, New London took on first place Holy Trinity Catholic on Thursday. The Tigers lost in three sets (14-25, 14-25, 9-25).
Van Buren County competed in the Davis County Invitational on Saturday. The Warriors took the first set off Chariton in their final match but were unable to carry that momentum in a 1-2 (21-16, 19-21, 13-15) loss. VBC also fell to Davis County 0-2 (13-21, 15-21) and West Burlington 0-2 (13-21, 8-21). The Warriors and Falcons will square off again in the Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinals Oct. 22.
Cardinal and Keota dropped matches on the road Thursday. The Eagles fell 0-3 (18-25, 23-25, 9-25) to Montezuma. Cardinal lost 0-2 (15-21, 16-21) at PCM.
