WELLMAN — If anyone needed a high school football player, Golden Hawks were being auctioned off Friday before Mid-Prairie scrimmaged against West Liberty.
It was an effort to raise money for sports teams. Mid-Prairie introduced members of the cross-country and volleyball teams before football took the field at Dwight G. Sattler Field.
“I thought we played well overall considering we are replacing a lot of starters,” Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh said. There were 13 seniors on last season’s roster. “Defensively, our first group didn't allow a touchdown and offensively, we had a lot of guys contribute. Look forward to next week.”
That would be the home season opener when the Golden Hawks host the West Burlington/Notre Dame Falcons in Wellman. WBND has a new head coach in Joe Bowman who takes over a program which graduated 13 seniors from last year’s 4-5 team that lost at Mid-Prairie Oct. 9 35-12.
The night was tagged the Gator Bowl because admission to the event was a sports drink.
The high school season gets underway Monday when Mid-Prairie plays in the Keota volleyball tournament. The cross-country teams will be at the Iowa City West Invitational Thursday.
