FAIRFIELD — Mid-Prairie had to pull out all the stops on Tuesday night to outlast Fairfield in non-conference action. The Golden Hawks used clutch defense and timely hits to pull out an extra-inning thrill ride, beating the Trojans 8-6 in nine.
Fairfield looked to have won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when Tallon Bates sent a double to left field that nearly scored the game-winning run, but the Golden Hawks’ relay to home plate cut down the run short, and Mid-Prairie relief pitcher Cain Brown got out of the inning to keep the game alive.
“Cain did an excellent job throwing strikes, and we had some big defensive plays,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Kyle Mullet. “That's the thing you look for this time of year.”
In the ninth, Dylan Henry gave Mid-Prairie a 7-6 lead on an RBI double, and Will Cavanagh followed with an RBI single to make it 8-6.
Cavanagh had a big day for the Golden Hawks, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Collin Miller was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Fresh off the track, Cain Brown was huge for the Golden Hawks, going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs at the plate, and giving up just one earned run over four innings on the mound to pick up the win. Brock Harland had a pair of doubles.
Fairfield had six hits off Golden Hawk pitching. Evan Haines went 1-for-2 with a double two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the way. Chandler Pumphrey was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Nate Smithburg went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Connor Lyons knocked one in as well.
Despite the loss, Trojan head coach Josh Allison says he saw a lot of battle out of his squad.
“They didn’t give up,” Allison said. “I'm really proud of how the boys are coming together. We're really starting to gel.”
Brad Woodburn got the start for Fairfield and gave up five earned runs over 2.3 innings. Smithburg was tagged with the loss, giving up two earned runs over 3.1 frames.
Mid-Prairie is now 2-1 on the year. They’ll travel to Cascade on Thursday. Fairfield (2-2) will be at Davis County for a tournament on Saturday.
