Mid-Prairie boys and McArtor headed to state

After finishing fourth at the state-qualifying meet the last two years, the Mid-Prairie boys? cross-country team snapped that streak this year.

The unranked Golden Hawks took second place at Monday?s Class 2A state-qualifying meet at the Cedarcrest Golf and Country Club, earning a trip to Fort Dodge.

Mid-Prairie totaled 98 points, edging No. 13 Albia by two points and finishing 11 points ahead of fourth-ranked Northeast. The Golden Hawks finished only behind seventh-ranked Tipton, which won the meet with 56 points.

Sophomore Jared Draper took 10

place in 17:30 to lead the Golden Hawks. Draper began the race patiently, and then moved up about 30 places over the race?s last two miles.

Freshman Ryan Errthum finished 14

Mid-Prairie senior Mallory McArtor, who qualified for the state cross-country meet last fall as an individual, is headed back after taking third place at Monday?s meet. McArtor, who is ranked 24

individually in Class 2A, blew past five runners in the race?s final 150 meters to take third place in 16:55.

McArtor finished only behind Danville-New London?s Cassandra Stuflick, who is ranked fourth in Class 2A and won the race in 15:48, and Northeast?s Alenna Marcucci, who edged McArtor for second place by a fraction of a second.

McArtor led the Golden Hawk girls to a fourth-place finish at the meet, as Mid-Prairie totaled 109 points. Top-ranked Northeast won the meet with 34 points, and Mediapolis scored 82 points to edge seventh-ranked Davis County by six points for second place.
