WELLMAN — Mid-Prairie and Mt. Pleasant went toe-to-toe for two quarters of back and forth action on Monday night in Wellman, but once the second half started, it was all Golden Hawks.
Mid-Prairie outlasted Mt. Pleasant 68-54 in boys’ hoops. It was the Golden Hawks’ fifth win in a row.
“The style of play that we play really wears on teams,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert. “We feel like we have a really big bench that we can dig into to help play that style.”
It was Mt. Pleasant that took control early, scoring a flurry of points in the first quarter to take a 14-11 lead into the second. Mid-Prairie’s offense finally got going in the final few minutes of the half, which turned into a 31-26 Golden Hawk advantage.
For the second game in a row, Mt. Pleasant was doomed by the beginning of the third quarter. Mid-Prairie started lighting it up from outside, scoring a game-high 21 points in the third quarter to take a 52-36 lead into the final eight minutes.
“We preach that first two minutes of the third quarter,” said Lambert. “We've got to come out with energy, and we've got to win those first two minutes.”
Mid-Prairie’s lead was big enough to overcome a fourth-quarter Mt. Pleasant rush that saw the Panthers score 18 points, a game-high.
Brady Weber filled the stat sheet for Mid-Prairie, putting in 18 points, while also leading the team with seven assists and seven steals.
“All credit to my teammates on that,” Weber said. “When we've got such great athletes, I can throw a bad pass, and they can make a great play and make the pass look good.”
Weber was one of three double-digit scorers for Mid-Prairie. Bryce Henry scored 15 points. Ace Peck finished with 12. Conner Wiles and Landon Kos each had six. Hudson Ehrenfelt and Kaden Kos scored four each, and Brooks Weber finished with three.
Mt. Pleasant’s Ryan Helling scored 18 points in the loss, while also dishing out six assists. Ian Reid put up 11 points. Noah Lange finished with eight points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Aiden Humble had eight points. Keegan Heaton scored four. Grayson Walker finished with three, and Brody Clark chipped in with two.
Mid-Prairie followed Monday’s win with a 94-57 skunking of Durant on Tuesday night. The Golden Hawks are now 3-13 overall. Mt. Pleasant saw a comeback attempt at Wilton fall short, dropping that road game 79-68, to fall to 1-13.
