EDDYVILLE — While it sounds good to say the Golden Hawks are the Class 2A District 1 champions, there are seven other district team champions.
Mid-Prairie wants to be the only champion and that would be Class 2A state champion. That opportunity is to be decided Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The Golden Hawks swept the team titles Thursday, the girls in a runaway by 34 points, the boys by 12.
Mid-Prairie won each district title in the same manner — depth. The boys scored in 14 of the 19 events and had double points in five events with 13 boys qualified for state in 11 events. Cain Brown tied his father’s Golden Hawk record, winning the high jump. Ten other boys events are headed to state.
The only events Mid-Prairie has not qualified a girl for state are the long jump, 4x200 meter relay, 4x400 and the 100. There are 16 Mid-Prairie girls qualified for state, four in four events.
Pekin’s girls were fourth as a team and advanced eight girls in seven entries to the state meet.
Pekin had Brady Millikin qualify in three events with Brayden Sobaski and Zack Wise advancing to state in individual events.
Cardinal had five entries with Griffin Greiner accounting for four of them. Teammate Isaac Lett finished second to Greiner in the 200 meters.
“Lett getting to state in the 200 is awesome,” Cardinal coach Rich Mayson said. “That was the one we hoped for but didn't necessarily expect. We expected Griff to get there in his four events, but I'm still proud of him for performing.”
Van Buren County’s Lane Davis sped to second place over 10 hurdles in the 110-meters race.
