WELLMAN — Mid-Prairie certainly had to work for their spot in the Class 2A Substate 5 semifinals when the Golden Hawks hosted a tough Mediapolis team in the quarterfinal round on Thursday.
Mid-Prairie had to claw back from an early fourth-quarter deficit, scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter to secure a 63-56 win, ending Mediapolis’ season in the process.
Mid-Prairie used a late second-quarter run to lead at halftime, going up 33-28 after trailing by one point entering the second quarter. The Golden Hawks, however, had their worst eight minutes in the third, losing the period 19-11.
Down 47-44 entering the fourth, the Golden Hawks didn’t panic. Instead, they pushed past the Bulldogs to avoid an early-round upset and eliminate Mediapolis for the second-straight year.
Bryce Henry paced the Golden Hawks once again, scoring 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting and 3-for-5 from three-point land. Kale Miller scored 12 points from the bench for Mid-Prairie’s only other double-digit scorer.
Brooks Weber finished the night with nine points and eight rebounds. Tristan Koller had nine pointso. Hudson Ehrenfelt finished with eight. Clayton Davidson and Bo Pennington scored three apiece, and Carson Humphrey ended his night with two.
The Golden Hawks will now get the chance to take on Northeast, a school that Mid-Prairie hasn’t played since 2023. The Rebels finished second place in the River Valley North this year, and just throttled Durant 76-36 in the quarterfinals.
That game will be on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., the same time top-seeded Regina Catholic will host Central Lee. The winners of those games will meet up on Feb. 28 with a berth in the Class 2A state tournament up for grabs.
