WEST LIBERTY — In a girls golf Class 2A regional final Monday, Mid-Prairie’s team lowered its best group score and finished third.
Williamsburg won with 370 and Anamosa shot 416 with Mid-Prairie at 442 and Tipton at 453. That 442 total is the 18-hole low for the Golden Hawks year.
Although Mid-Prairie fell one spot short of making it to the state meet, it was a big step forward for them and their future. The experience of advancing to play in a regional final “as young as we are is quite an accomplishment and finishing third just reinforces their great play,” Mid-Prairie coach Tracy McArtor said.
The Hawks were led by Gabi Robertson and her 106, an 18-hole personal record. Other scores were: Madelyn Bender 109, Madi Davidson 111, Elliot Debler 116 (new 9 hole PR of 54 on back 9), Alexa Huber 118x, Clarie Zirkelbach 125 (new 9 hole PR of 57 on back 9).
"The girls played their best golf of the year and that's exactly when it's supposed to happen,“ McArtor said. ”I'm so proud of this group and all they've accomplished. Each week they showed up and worked hard to get better, starting with open gyms in January and it all culminated with their great play Monday.“
The future looks really exciting for Mid-Prairie’s program.
“I think the girls see that as well,” McArtor said.
