Mid-Prairie found itself on upset watch through the first half of its Class 2A playoff game against North Fayette Valley. The Golden Hawks overcame a surprise 13-13 deadlock at halftime to come away with a 34-19 win Friday night.
The Golden Hawks were shutout by a scrappy TigerHawks team in the opening 12 minutes. Mid-Prairie didn’t get on the board until a 78-yard touchdown run by sophomore Ryan Henry tied the game 6-6 in the second quarter. The TigerHawks weathered the explosive play and traded blows with the home side well into the second half.
Brooks Weber delivered the dagger to North Fayette Valley’s upset hopes in the fourth quarter. With the Golden Hawks up 27-19, the junior quarterback tossed 26-yard touchdown pass to Kaden Kos, who got a step on his defender and hauled in an a well-placed throw to put Mid-Prairie up 33-19 before the extra point.
Kos also helped secure the win when he forced a fumble on North Fayette Valley’s ensuing drive. TigerHawks quarterback Cain Rodgers escaped from Mid-Prairie’s pass rush and managed to flip the ball to Jimi Duffey. As the junior tried to turn upfield, Kos jarred the ball loose as while dragging Duffey down. Kendrick Kos dove on the ball at the Mid-Prairie 31-yard line, giving possession back to the Golden Hawks with just under three minutes left.
Kaden Kos was on the receiving end of another Weber touchdown throw in the third quarter, and capped off an excellent game with 121 all purpose yards and two receiving touchdowns. He also led Mid-Prairie with 12.5 tackles, including 5.5 for loss along with his forced fumble.
Weber also connected with Hudson Ehrenfelt on a 10-yard pass to tie the game at 13. He finished 12 of 17 for 162 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions.
Ehrenfelt had a quieter game by his high standards, but still finished with 74 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries to go with his touchdown reception. Henry led the Golden Hawks in rushing with 92 yards on just five carries.
Mid-Prairie moves on to the second round and a home matchup with a familiar foe in Mediapolis. The two teams met Oct. 10 in a game that ended in a 62-21 Mid-Prairie win that secured the Golden Hawks the 2A District 6 title.
Mediapolis upset Centerville in the first round of the playoffs to set up the rematch. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Mid-Prairie High School.
