WELLMAN — Mid-Prairie lost some of its top performers on the football field from 202, but a lot of talent returns for the Golden Hawks.
Starting quarterback, Will Cavanagh graduated this past summer. He was a huge offensive presence for Mid-Prairie last fall.
Cavanagh finished with 1,086 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also rushed 85 times for 349 yards and five touchdowns.
Senior Collin Miller will likely be quarterback number one next season. Miller connected on both of his passing attempts last year for 29 yards. He also had 76 yards receiving on the year.
Out of the backfield last season, graduate Tyler Helmuth led the way. Helmuth rushed for 771 yards and 16 touchdowns on 106 carries.
Despite not having their leading rusher back, Mid-Prairie is in capable hands with senior Braden Hartley and junior Dylan Henry. Hartley rushed for 582 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2021, while Henry finished with 199 and one touchdown.
Leading receiver Jackson Pennington also graduated. Pennington had 37 receptions for 366 yards and five touchdowns.
Graduate Jarrett Hoffman followed with 183 yards and three touchdowns on 12 receptions.
Returning leading receivers for the Golden Hawks are seniors Cain Brown and Grady Gingerich. Brown ended with 10 receptions and 168 yards. Gingerich tallied 98 yards on six receptions.
On defense, leading tackler Justice Jones will not return. He had 69.5 tackles in 2021.
Seniors Hartley and Terry Bordenave had the next most tackles, 47.5 and 37.5 respectively.
Mid-Prairie will be without some of its best performers on the football field in 2022, but the Golden Hawks have plenty of fire power to see success.
The Golden Hawks went 6-4 in 2021. This season, they will face the same opponents with the chance redeem their loss to Sigourney-Keota, Regina Catholic and Williamsburg. The fourth loss came from West Marshall in the second round of Class 2A playoffs.
