CARROLL — Mid-Prairie (19-10) is one win away from a shot a state championship.
After a battle hardened win over Cascade in the first round, 3-2, two more test stand in the way of the sixth-seeded Golden Hawks and the next is in the form of the No. 2 seeded Midgets of Estherville-Lincoln Central (32-2).
The Midgets took care of Interstate 35 5-1 in their first round contest. Other winners were top-seeded Van Meter, who clipped No. 8 seed Kuemper Catholic 5-3, and No. 4 seed Beckman Catholic, which upended No. 5 seed Dike-New Hartford 7-4.
It’s not going to get any easier for the Golden Hawks and the Midgets come into the semifinal matchup with a slew of efficient arms on the hill.
Landon Vaske has an earned runs average (ERA) of 1.13 with 67 strikeouts on 176 batters faced. Owen Larson has faced 198 opponents striking out 62 with an ERA of 1.36.
In 10 games, Carter Snyder holds an ERA of 1.82. Snyder has 69 strikeouts on 202 batters. Rounding out the Midgets from the mound is Ryan Schiltz. In 12 games and 154 batters faced, he has 46 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.93.
Estherville-Lincoln Central has a handful of sluggers at the plate.
Blake Evans leads the Midgets with an average of .416. Blake Ingvall has an average of .373. Schiltz bats .368. Seth Busch swings it at an average of .360. Larson bats .355 and Snyder bats .354.
The arm that will meet the Midget bats in the semifinals is too be determined. Mid-Prairie’s Collin Miller must take a rest day due to pitch count rules and Karson Grout is expected to only hit due to injury, so the Golden Hawks will most likely be without their top-two pitchers.
Among potential starters for Mid-Prairie are Brock Harland, who sports a 2.10 ERA ion five starts this year, Brady Weber, who holds a a 3.06 ERA through 10 appearances, and Bowen Burmeister, who has a 4.44 ERA in nine appearances.
The Golden Hawks and Midgets will play the first of the two semifinals on Thursday at 4:30. On the other side of the bracket, top seeded Van Meter (37-0) will take on fourth seeded Beckman Catholic (25-13).
Van Meter took care of eighth seeded Kuemper Catholic, 5-3, in its first round matchup. Beckman Catholic defeated fifth seeded Dike-New Hartford in its opening round.
The winner of Wednesday’s game will compete for a state title on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
