WELLMAN - It has been a busy couple of days for wrestling at Mid-Prairie High School with Saturday being a boys tournament and Monday a combination junior varsity and girls tourney.
'It was great to see so many girls competing in our home gym,” Mid-Prairie head coach Justin Garvey said. 'The competition level was tough, to say the least.”
The school also has started a tournament in memory of Colton Allen, who died in the summer of 2019. Saturday was the second annual Colton Allen Memorial Tournament.
Last year Mid-Prairie finished second as a team and were the champions this year.
'I know this day means a lot to our upperclassmen who were friends and teammates with Colton,” Garvey said. 'This year we did not have a big commemoration like we did last year. The only thing that I did was ask Colton's twin brother, Cory, to hand out the awards at the end of the meet,”
The Golden Hawks have been a leader in getting girls on the mat. This season is the second year the Golden Hawks have had a girls wrestling team. Last year, there were five girls on the team and the number has grown to eight this year. The girls practice everyday with the boys team.
'We do our best to treat every wrestler on our team equal,” Garvey said. 'Everyone does the same sprints and other various workouts together as a team.” Several of the teams in attendance Monday had very talented girls squads, Garvey said while also pointing out that the sport is new for the females so like most girls teams, Mid-Prairie's girls are a little green to the sport.
'Half of our girls have less than one month of experience and the rest have just one season of competition,” Garvey said. 'Sarah Meader was the star of the team Monday night.”
Meader won her weight class with a pin and a decision.
'Sarah has come a long way from this time last year,” Garvey said. 'She has learned how to be aggressive on the mat and score critical points. Another thing from Monday night was Madison Kelly, who picked up her first win of the night by fall.”
