Mid-Prairie girls out in regional semis
Golden Hawks battle with Vinton-Shellsburg, get knocked off in postseason tournament

VINTON — The Mid-Prairie girls basketball team gave it their all in Vinton on Wednesday night, but in the end, the Golden Hawks couldn’t get it done in the Class 3A Region 8 quarterfinals.
Mid-Prairie played No. 10 Vinton-Shellsburg within five in the first half. The Vikings led 11-9 after one quarter and 24-19 at halftime.
Mid-Prairie scored a game-high 13 points in the third quarter, but they allowed a game-high 16 from the Vikings, and Vinton-Shellsburg led 40-23 at the half.
Mid-Prairie’s offense couldn’t keep up in the fourth. Vinton-Shellsburg won the fourth 15-8 to run away with the game.
Maya Nonnenmann led Mid-Prairie with 10 points on the night.
Mid-Prairie finished the season at 16-7. Before the loss on Wednesday night, the Golden Hawks had won 11 out of their 12 final games. Every Mid-Prairie loss in 2023 was at the hands of a ranked team.
The Golden Hawks saw the end of the line for a senior class that included Kylie Reinier, Josie Greiner, Landry Pacha, Amara Jones, Molly Yoder and Nonnenmann. Those players were six of the Golden Hawks’ top scorers this season.
Vinton-Shellsburg will play against No. 6 Grinnell in the regional final.
