WELLMAN ? It was a quick game for the Mid-Prairie girls soccer team Tuesday, April 25, as the Golden Hawks faced the Notre Dame Nikes in a non-conference game that ended 0-10 in the opponent?s favor.
Scoring started early for Notre Dame after a goal with only a minute and a half expired.
The team made their second goal three minutes later, followed by the Nikes? third goal coming after 11 minutes of play.
Notre Dame didn?t relinquish control of the ball for the next two minutes as they put up another point, putting the score at 4-0.
Mid-Prairie tried to rally the rest of the first half, but Notre Dame would get the ball with a little more than seven minutes left where Notre Dame would find the back of the net again putting the score at 5-0.
A minute and a half later, Notre Dame scored their sixth goal of the game.
Mid-Prairie tried to keep the ball on their half of the field and would do so for most of the remaining five minutes, until Notre Dame seized control and scored on a shot with just 38 seconds left to put the score at 0-7 going into the half.
The second half started where the first one left off with when Notre Dame was able to make the score 8-0.
Immediately following, the Nikes? ninth goal was put on the scoreboard.
Play would go back and forth on the field with a couple of close shots by Mid-Prairie which would be blocked, before the game winning goal was made, ending the game by mercy rule.
Mid-Prairie coach Reid Kaalberg says despite the loss, there were positives that could be taken away from the game.
?In the second half, we possessed the ball a little bit better. We had some more chances to score in the second half as well. Maya Hall, Ireland Hostetler, Ali Butters and Amanda Miller all worked really hard today. That was really good. All of the girls that played did an adequate job.?
The harder schedule has made it more of a challenge for the Golden Hawks as they get ready to wind down the season. What does that mean for the team?
?Right now, it would be nice for our girls who aren?t healthy to get healthy. Playing these teams like Regina and Notre Dame gives us some experience for when the post season comes, we are ready to play.?
Even though there were some regular players out due to injuries, others stepped in and did a great job.
?Jordan Hammen played today and she blew my mind. I did not see that effort coming from her. I was super proud of the effort she put in. I think once we start playing together as a team, we will be set to go.?
The Mid-Prairie girls next play at Mediapolis Friday, April 28, with the game starting at 5 p.m.
