KALONA — The Mid-Prairie softball team picked up quite the feather in its cap on Wednesday night.
The Golden Hawks defeated a familiar foe in the Washington Demons, coming back from a three-run deficit to score a 10-5 win. It was the first time Mid-Prairie beat Washington since 2014.
It was Washington that had the hot bats early on. The Demons took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning when RyLee Fishback sent a three-run home run out of the ballpark. It was her second bomb of the year and just the third for the Demons as a team.
From that point forward, however, the Golden Hawks shined bright. Mid-Prairie scored nine runs from the fourth to sixth innings, and Washington scored just one more run all night.
Eighth-grader Sophie Miller burned Washington at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Sydney Knebel was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and also struck out eight batters in a complete-game win.
Gabi Robertson was 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Dawsyn Miller went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Molly Yoder was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Altogether, the Godlen Hawks collected 22 hits off of Washington pitching.
Bella Salazar struggled in the circle, but she had a nice night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Fishback’s three-run jack was her only hit of the game. Lauren Henrichsen had a pair of singles, and Kendall Hinrichsen knocked in one run.
Mid-Prairie ended the regular season 16-12. They’ve got a regional tournament matchup with No. 11 Chariton next week. Washington fell to 11-25 with the loss.
