FAIRFIELD — Tuesday night was Day 1 of girls basketball at Fairfield High School, and the Trojans had a Union area foe, as Mid-Prairie came to town.
For the third year in a row, the Golden Hawks toppled the Trojans in the season opener, beating Fairfield 73-26.
Mid-Prairie had the hot hand right away. The Golden Hawks used some pressure defense and a bundle of fast break points to eclipse 20 points in the first eight minutes, going up 23-5 after one quarter.
“We knew they were going to come out and play high pressure defense on us,” said Fairfield head coach Jarrod Belzer. “But it's one thing to see it on film, and it's another thing to be able to handle it well.”
Mid-Prairie continued to pile on the points early. The Golden Hawks built a 41-11 lead at halftime, and held that lead to a 61-26 advantage after three quarters.
“We want to be able to play fast and get the game going up and down,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Danny Hershberger. “I thought our girls did a good job of playing fast, but under control.”
Brooklyn Schneider led the Golden Hawks with 14 points and five steals. Jeorgia Evans had 13 points and five steals off the bench to give Mid-Prairie two double-digit scorers.
Izzy Kite scored nine points. Tessa Bombei and Morgyn Bender scored eight each. Brylee Gearhart scored six. Callie Huber finished with five points and 11 rebounds. Katelyn Harland had four points. Myli Hershberger, Olivia Swartzentruber and Kadence Grout each had two points, bringing all 11 Golden Hawks on the scoresheet.
“Anytime you can have all five girls on the court and then you bring in a sub and they're also a threat to score, that's a huge advantage offensively,” Coach Hershberger said. “I'm really proud of the start they had.”
Fairfield’s Emma Metcalf scored 11 points. Natalie Steele scored eight. Faith Jones had three, and Maddy Martin scored two.
Mid-Prairie went to 1-0 with the win. The Golden Hawks will play at Benton next Tuesday. Fairfield (0-1) will play at Oskaloosa on that same night.
