Union area boys basketball teams take the court for preseason action

WELLMAN - Union area boys basketball teams are getting their final doses of simulated game action before the start of the 2025-26 season. A few squads participated in jamborees Monday night at Mid-Prairie and Hillcrest Academy.
Mid-Prairie hosted seven teams, including Mt. Pleasant and Pekin. MP played a half of basketball against River Valley South side West Branch. Pekin took on Tipton.
Mt. Pleasant will begin the regular season at home against Cedar Rapids Washington. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Dec. 1.
Pekin starts the season on the road against Wapello. The two sides will face off at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2.
Mid-Prairie dominated on its home floor to end Monday’s jamboree. The Golden Hawks defeated Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 35-10 in two quarters of play.
The Golden Hawks also tip off the season Dec. 1. They face Benton at 7:30 p.m. at Mid-Prairie High School.
Four area teams took part in single-half scrimmages at Hillcrest Academy. The Ravens ended the night with a matchup against Southeast Iowa Super Conference South side Mediapolis.
The game served as a final tuneup for a Ravens outfit that went 21-4 last season. Hillcrest also played in a scrimmage against Sigourney, falling 55-44 on Nov. 22.
The Ravens will start the regular season against Highland on Dec. 2. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Highland High School.
Fellow area teams New London and Columbus squared off to open the Hillcrest jamboree. The Wildcats edged out a 24-20 win, a preview of the teams’ regular season matchup Dec. 11.
Columbus will start the regular season against Lone Tree on Dec. 2. The Lions and Wildcats will square off at 7:30 p.m. at Columbus High School.
New London begins the season with a home game against West Burlington. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 inside Charles Lorber Gymnasium.
WACO followed up the Columbus-New London matchup with a game against BGM. The Warriors had a two-point lead after eight minutes, but a strong second quarter saw them seal a 30-21 win.
The Warriors will scrimmage Keota and Washington on Saturday before starting the regular season against Holy Trinity Catholic. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at WACO High School.
