Mid-Prairie holds off Washington
Golden Hawks fend off Demon girls in close none-conference bout

WELLMAN — Washington and Mid-Prairie girls basketball played a close one on Monday night in Wellman.
In a game where neither team led by more than eight points, it was the Golden Hawks who came out with the slender victory 55-53.
Washington looked on point early on. The Demons raced out to an quick 12-4 lead, but the Golden Hawks used a run of their own to take an advantage after one.
Mid-Prairie got the offense going through the rest of the first period, using a 16-5 run to make it 20-17 after eight minutes.
Both scored their game-high in the first quarter.
While each team settled in in the second it continued to be anyone's game.
Mid-Prairie created some separation mid-way through the period, building the largest lead of the game at 32-24.
The advantage only got smaller as Mid-Prairie hit just one more field goal the rest of the quarter as Washington got it down to six, 34-28, by the half.
To begin the third quarter, Kendall Hinrichsen and Adalyn Long combined for five straight to get the Demons within one, 34-33.
That was as close as they would come the rest of the quarter as a 7-2 run put the Golden Hawks back up six, 41-35.
Lauren Hinrichsen hit a three to bring Washington back within three with just under three minutes to go, but they didn’t score again, that is until Long’s half court heave at the buzzer rattled in to make it a 44-41 ball game heading into the fourth.
In the final frame, the Demons scored just four points over the first three minutes of the period, but some solid defense kept them in it.
Mid-Prairie was held to just two points through that span as the game came to ones again, 46-45.
The shooting struggles ended up biting the Demons as they hit just two more field goals, both coming in the final 12 seconds of the game.
After the Golden Hawks Callie Huber split at the line, Lauren Hinrichsen drilled a three with 12.9 second left to pull the game within three, 53-50.
However, Huber was sent to the line once again and knocked down both to secure the win.
Huber finished with 13 points and 17 rebound for Mid-Prairie. Brylee Gearhart ended with a double double as well notching 12 points and 14 rebounds. Izzy Kite added nine points.
Long ended with a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds for Washington. Addison Miller scored 11 and Oaklee Sobaski scored eight.
Mid-Prairie moves to 14-4 with the win. Washington drops to 6-13.
