The 2024 high school volleyball season has finally come and gone, and for the first time in four years, the Union area’s coverage wrapped up at the state tournament.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks showed out all year, but especially in the postseason, eventually representing the Union area in Iowa City.
The 2024 small school All-Union team reflects the season Mid-Prairie had. The Golden Hawks were honored with the coaches of the year, the captain and two more players.
Hillcrest Academy has two players on the list. Highland and Winfield-Mount Union each get an honoree as well.
Without further ado, here is the 2024 All-Union small school volleyball team.
Coaches of the year: Sherry and Zebulan Evans, Mid-Prairie
Sherry and Zebulan Evans are our co-coaches of the year after a phenomenal season with the Golden Hawks.
The Mid-Prairie volleyball team went 33-9 this year, continuing a meteoric rise from a six-win season just five years ago. The Golden Hawks lost just one game in River Valley play, and continued to rise throughout the regional tournament.
Mid-Prairie knocked off Davis County, Albia and Wilton during the Class 3A Region 8 tournament. The Golden Hawks were knocked out in the state quarterfinals by eventual champion Mount Vernon.
Captain: Jovi Evans, junior, Mid-Prairie
Mid-Prairie’s Jovi Evans did quite literally everything for the Golden Hawks this fall.
Evans led Mid-Prairie with 359 kills and 584 assists this year, while also collecting 374 digs, third-most on the team.
Evans will look to help bring the Golden Hawks back to state next year after helping the team break a 20-year state drought in 2024.
Dakota Mitchell, senior, Mid-Prairie
Dakota Mitchell has been a mainstay on the All-Union volleyball list since her freshman year, and she’s back again this season.
Mitchell had another monster year, digging the ball 560 times to lead the Golden Hawks. She also had a 90.9% serve efficiency with a team-leading 58 aces.
Callie Huber, senior, Mid-Prairie
There weren’t many players who could hold a candle to Callie Huber at the front of the net this fall.
Huber finished tied for second on the team in kills, with 256, while also leading the team with 46 blocks. Away from the net, Huber collected 84 digs and 19 service aces.
Malia Yoder, senior, Hillcrest Academy
Hillcrest Academy continued to rise this year in the sport of volleyball, and Malia Yoder’s work at the net was a big reason why.
Yoder led the Ravens with 353 kills, while also pacing the team with 389 digs.
Yoder was also excellent at the service lines, serving at a 93.2% efficiency with a team-leading 60 aces.
Claire Withrow, junior, Hillcrest Academy
Claire Withrow was one of the best setters in the Union coverage are, dishing out a ridiculous 667 assists on the year for Hillcrest Academy.
Withrow was valuable all around the court for the Ravens this fall. She collected 182 digs on the year, as well as 60 service aces.
Adeline Krotz, senior, Highland
The Highland Huskies were real players in the Southaest Iowa Super Conference’s North Division race, and the work of Adeline Krotz was big reason why.
Krotz led the team with 179 kills on the year. She was also one of the best servers in the entire area, serving at a 97% efficiency with 30 aces.
Kellee Milks, junior, Winfield-Mount Union
Winfield-Mount Union junior Kellee Milks continued to climb up the ranks in the SEISC North this season, and that helped the Wolves finish in the top half the division once again in 2024.
Milks led the team with 188 digs on the year. She served at an 89% rate and collected 26 aces throughout the year for the Wolves.
