WELLMAN — For the fourth time in two years, the Mid-Prairie football team put a hurting on Mediapolis in a marquee football game on Friday night. This time it was two games away from the Dome.
The fourth-ranked Golden Hawks put together perhaps their best performance thus far, busting the Bulldogs 46-0 to inch one game away from the promised land.
The game was nearly out of reach just one quarter into play, as Mid-Prairie piled up 29 points in the first quarter alone.
The Golden Hawks scored on their first play from scrimmage, as senior standout Hudson Ehrenfelt darted 58 yards to the end zone to throw a big early punch.
That would be the first of four first-quarter touchdowns for Mid-Prairie. Mediapolis couldn’t figure out the Golden Hawks on either side of the ball, and the scoreboard read 29-0 after one.
Mediapolis fared better in the second quarter, but still gave up 10 points, including a 40-yard field goal by Kale Miller, his only one of the game.
The entire second half was played under a continuous clock, as Mid-Prairie held a 39-0 lead at halftime, and the Bulldogs never got back within 35.
Ehrenfelt rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries. He had another long touchdown run for the only score of the second half. Ryan Henry ran for 38 yards in the win as well.
Brooks Weber completed nine of his 12 pass attempts, going for 209 yards and four touchdowns. Nolan Jergens had two of those, taking three catches for 36 yards and two scores. Carson Humphrey had a 63-yard touchdown catch for the longest pass play of the night, and Kaden Kos finished with 53 receiving yards and a score.
Sophomore Kendrick Kos had a fantastic day defensively, picking off two passes. Tommy Miller and Bromx Miller each had a fumble recovery, while Tommy Miller and Cecil Kelley co-led the team with 3.5 tackles apiece.
That sets up a clash of the titans in Wellman this Friday, as No. 4 Mid-Prairie (9-1) hosts No. 5 Van Meter (8-2) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The winner of that game will play the following week in Cedar Falls.
