Mid-Prairie offense erupts; WACO wins; Cobras, Wildcats lose

Mid-Prairie saw an offensive explosion Friday while WACO downed a team that was ranked in the top five when the season began.
Sigourney-Keota lost to a team that had been ranked all season and Columbus played well before falling.
Mid-Prairie 56, Central Lee 21
DONNELLSON -- The Golden Hawks had a 14-0 lead before giving up a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown in the Class 2A District 6 opener. The Golden Hawks answered with two more TDs for a 28-7 lead at halftime, then scored 28 more points in the third quarter.
'We ran the ball well,” Mid-Prairie coach Pete Cavamaugh said. 'The offensive line played really well.”
Justin Schwartz rushed 25 times for 176 yards and two TDs. Mid-Prairie teammate Grant Boyse had two TDs and 64 yards on six carries while Kayden Reiner scored once, gaining 30 yards on six totes. Rex Peck had a 51-yard rushing TD. Connor Miller's rushing TD was from the 22. Tom Butters caught three passes for 68 yards and a score.
Reiner had seven tackles on defense.
Mid-Prairie is 1-4 overall and hosts Williamsburg Friday.
Wilton 35, Sigourney-Keota 0
WILTON -- 'This was a tough loss against a very good opponent,” SK coach Jared Jensen said of the Class 1A District 5 game. 'It was a tough task for a team, down seven starters from the beginning of the season. We finally got caught in a trap. Our guys filling in did a great job, we just faced a team that was great on all sides of the ball and just overpowered us.”
Wilton had 384 yards gained to 145 for SK.
The Cobras hung around in the first half and kept it close, down 14-0 at halftime, but Wilton came out and scored first in the second half.
'We couldn't get much going offensively, but JD Stout ran the ball hard and had runs that were so close to being broken for a TD,” Jensen said. 'Defensively, Trent Hendricks was flying all over the field and around the ball. He is making some big strides on defense this year.”
Stout had 61 yards on 17 attempts and completed one pass to Kyle Weber for a first down. Hendricks made 8.5 tackles.
The Cobras are 3-2 and host Van Buren Friday.
WACO 49, Lone Tree 38
LONE TREE -- In this Class 8 District 4 game, the Warriors jumped on top 27-0, led 27-11 at the half, scored first in the third quarter and built the lead to 49-17 before three fourth-quarter Lions touchdowns made the final tally look close.
Colton Horak accumulated 197 total yards (155 rushing) on 20 carries and five receptions with three rushing TDs. He also completed a TD pass. Warrior teammate Nik Coble threw for 110 yards and two TDs on 15 of 22 passing and ran for 67 yards and a TD on nine carries. Drew Kissell had five catches, two for touchdowns, and 54 yards. Elijah McGohan caught three passes for 29 yards and a score.
WACO is 4-2 overall, 3-2 district and plays at HLV Friday.
Van Buren 24, Columbus 6
KEOSAUQUA -- In this Class 1A Distict 5 game, the defenses ruled. The home team had just 215 total yards while the the Wildcats had 177.
'Chance Colby and Jose Cerezo carried our defense with most of our team tackles being split between them,” Columbus coach Scott Symmonds said. 'We had Van Buren backpeddling in the first half, but were unable to finish drives. The turning point in the game happened during the first half when Chance forced a fumble and we failed to recover it.”
Colby had 13 tackles including three for loss while Cerezo had 11 including two for loss. Colby ran 13 times for 84 yards.
'Felix Solis continued to shine on offense, turing the corner on a sweep for a 50-yard TD,” Symmonds said. 'Other than that, we are young and continue to improve.”
